Andrew Coggan, PhD, will discuss what scientific research in the field of exercise physiology has revealed about the magnitude and time course of the physiological adaptations resulting from exercise training. This information will help you understand the WHY of periodization, i.e., how each phase of training is designed to fit within an overall plan intended to achieve peak fitness at the desired time. Knowing this WHY can help in maintaining motivation, aid in adjusting for unforeseen events, and/or be useful when designing a training program using an alternative to the widely-used linear approach to periodization.
